The United Auto Workers (UAW) is currently negotiating a contract with the Detroit 3 automakers that would last for four years and eight months, expiring on May 1, 2028. This date is significant as it is International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, which celebrates the achievements of the international labor movement. This timing would allow for contract negotiations during the industry’s busy spring selling season and eliminate the risk of workers facing harsh weather conditions during potential strikes in northern states.
Although a UAW spokesperson declined to comment on the matter, insiders familiar with the union’s thinking have revealed these details.
Proposed Pact Includes Significant Raises and Worker Benefits
The proposed contract also includes substantial raises for hourly workers, totaling more than 40 percent. Upon ratification, workers would receive a 20 percent raise, followed by 5 percent raises every September for the next four years. Additionally, the UAW is seeking a reduced workweek, cost-of-living adjustments, pensions, expanded retiree benefits, and a program similar to a jobs bank to provide financial support to laid-off workers.
The current contract is set to expire on September 14.
