On Monday, May 2, Politico released a draft opinion on the ongoing case Dobbs v. Jackson’s Women’s Health Organization, a case brought by Mississippi’s only abortion clinic to challenge the state law banning abortion. after 15 weeks. If this case comes down in favor of Dobb, the precedent Roe v. Wade established in 1972 will be rescinded federally.
In the draft opinion, with a stacked, pro-life majority in the Supreme Court, the Court decides to overturn Roe v. Wade. Generation Ratify Amherst strongly opposes this decision, and we use it as a call to action in a reproductive rights crisis of our time. Generation Ratify Amherst is the local chapter of a national youth-led organization working to enshrine legal gender equality in our Constitution and secure reproductive rights for all.
Reproductive rights are intersectional with basic civil rights under the 14th Amendment and gender equality. By removing a precedent set decades ago, by rolling back, we are removing the rights and livelihoods of thousands of individuals. It is a person’s right to decide if they can give birth to a child in this world, taking into account their abilities, circumstances and means of subsistence.
With the annulment of Roe v. Wade, we’re taking away the rights of the BIPOC community, the low-income community, the LGBTQ+ community, and just making abortion more dangerous and more deadly. Generation Ratify Amherst will not bear to see us back down. We support reproductive rights for all and demand that Dobbs v. Jackson’s Women’s Health Organization comes out in favor of Jackson.
