Not only him, the entire world has been mesmerized by Bruce Lee’s intriguing and heart-stopping fighting skills. Specializing in martial arts skills like Kungfu, both of them got fame in the world through their art. Over time, martial arts expert Li Lianqiu also gained fame from the film Mummy, while Choeun Phath also won a lot of praise from the audience around the world through his acting.
The Shanghai International Film Festival has been doing the work of showcasing this film heritage of China on the world map for the last three decades. Last week on June 9, the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival opened at the Shanghai Grand Theater in Shanghai, China’s main commercial city. During the 10-day long film festival, around 450 outstanding Chinese and foreign films are being screened. These list the 53 films for the five major units of the Golden Goblet Awards that will compete for the relevant awards. The Shanghai International Film Festival was started in October 1993 and since then this film festival attracts audiences every year for 10 days in the month of June. This year in 2023, its 30th anniversary is also being celebrated. SIFF is regarded as the largest film festival in Asia and has witnessed the growth and changes of the Chinese film industry.
Just as Bruce Lee films in the early 70s and Jackie Chan films in the 80s were hugely popular in India, superhit Indian Hindi films of the 70s and 80s such as Awara, Caravan, Noori and Disco Dancer translated into Chinese Be it the famous films of the last two decades, 3 Idiots, Lagaan, Dangal, PK, Hindi Medium, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and the recently released English-Vinglish have won the hearts of film lovers in China.
This time the Indian film Sana is also being screened at the Shanghai International Film Festival. Also, film lovers are getting a chance to watch 83, Gargi, Ponniyin Selvan and Declaration during the Indian Film Week. And Manipur filmmaker Haobam Paban Kumar’s new film “Joseph’s Son” also premiered recently. It is the only Indian film, which will compete for the Golden Goblet Award 2023 along with 11 other films. All these films are being screened at the Shanghai Film City, the main venue of the Shanghai Film Festival, which also houses Asia’s first Dolby Theatre.
Indian films have always been screened at the Shanghai International Film Festival. In the year 2020, along with Article 15 and Section 375, Pariksha, Raahgir, Cargo were also screened, while in the year 2013, on the completion of 100 years of Indian cinema, 18 films were screened, including films like Barfi, 3 Idiots and Jolly LLB. were involved. At the same time, in the year 2021, Tamil films Kuzhangal and Mile Pathar were also shown.
In India too, the popularity and eagerness of Chinese films translated into Hindi and English languages has always been there. Super hit films like The Hero, Shaolin Soccer, Crouching Tiger-Hidden Dragon, 36 Chambers of Shaolin, Fist of Fury and Enter the Dragon have been loved by the audience. In January this year, films of SCO i.e. Shanghai Cooperation Organization were also screened in Mumbai from 27 to 31 January. It is noteworthy that India is presiding over the SCO in this year 2023. In addition to films from SCO member countries, two Chinese films, ‘Be for Busy’ directed by Yao Yihui and Homecoming directed by Xiaochi Rao, were also screened to the audience as part of the SCO Films Festival. Along with this, apart from the jury members of the SCO member countries, China’s famous film director Ning Ying was also included as a jury in this film festival.
During the ten days in the Shanghai International Film Festival, activities such as theme forum, “Belt and Road” Film Week, Film Market were also held. For the first time, “Science Fiction Film Week” was also established in this film festival. The winners of the Golden Goblet Awards will be announced on 17 June. Famous Indian actress and director Nandita Das has also joined this International Film Festival as a jury this year.
