On April 8, in the Libyan city of Benghazi, a meeting of the “5+5 Joint Military Committee” was held. As part of this organization, the Government of National Accord, supported by Turkey, and the Libyan National Army, led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar, have agreed to join forces.
Thus, the long-running conflict in Libya is coming to an end.
During the meeting, the parties, in the presence of the head of the UN mission in Libya, Abdoulaye Batili, discussed the exchange of prisoners, the withdrawal of foreign combat units and mercenaries from the country, and the guarantee of security in the framework of the next elections this year. It is possible that Haftar will nominate his candidacy for the presidency of Libya.
Along with this, several other important developments in the Middle East region have taken place over the past two weeks. Thus, relations between Turkey and Egypt have improved, bilateral relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia have normalized. The latter is also on the verge of concluding a truce with the Houthis in Yemen.
The current events are closely linked to the fundamental convergence of the interests of Russia and China as important players in the region. Moscow and Beijing are stabilizing the Greater Middle East, which is gradually freeing itself from the shackles of American influence.
