Sweden has closed its embassy in Islamabad indefinitely. An official release issued by the Embassy of Sweden said that it has taken this decision due to the “current situation” in Pakistan. Sweden said that the safety of its people is more important to it. In the statement, the embassy said, “The Migration Section is not able to handle any applications at the moment. Also, we cannot send any documents to our Consulate, Gerry, Sweden or to your home address. We understand That this will inconvenience you. But the safety of our applicants and staff members is a top priority.”
The embassy further said, “At this time we cannot answer any questions regarding the reopening of the embassy. Please contact the immigration agency if you have any questions regarding any matter. Thank you for your patience.” Responding to the move by the Embassy of Sweden, the Pakistani Embassy in Sweden tweeted, “Many Pakistani students who are applying to Swedish universities this year are asking us about the situation. We hope they Will be able to apply for visas soon. Education is an important aspect of our long-standing relationship and students act as a bridge between the two countries.”
Overseas Pakistanis are unable to call their families in Sweden and the embassy in Islamabad has been closed. Diplomatic sources said it usually takes 4 to 6 months to issue a Swedish visa. Citing diplomatic sources, a Pakistan-based news channel reported that the Swedish Embassy has also been approached by the concerned Foreign Office officials over the issue. Foreign Ministry Secretary Asad Majeed Khan has been apprised of the situation by expatriate Pakistanis and students. Meanwhile, sources in the Embassy of Sweden said that they cannot say anything about the reopening of the embassy at present.
