WNU Editor: For those who are new to the blog. I worked for the UN via ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) in Montreal for a number of years, followed by working at the UN building in New York City as a translator during their Assemblies. I am not surprised that Canada lost its bid, and here are my reasons why. Canada was late to this process. It takes 8 – 10 years of lobbying and “making deals” to get a UN security Council seat. Canada has been at it for only 4 years. A number of countries had already promised their votes to other countries, and it looks like they kept it. But it is not the only reason why they lost the bid. I still do not understand the policies, message and arguments that Canada was pushing on why it deserved a seat on the Council. And from what was being promoted …. abortion, LBGT rights, treatment of women and girls, etc., may play well in Canada, but it certainly does not play well in Muslim and some under-developed countries. It should also be noted that Canada alienated the three major powers on the Security Council who carry a lot of weight on other members. Prime Minister Trudeau’s negative views on President Trump are well known. Canada has tense relations with China over the arrest of Huawei Technologies Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou. And as for Russia. Russia has sanctions on Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland because of her views of Putin and Russia. That reason, among many, guaranteed no Russian support for Canada.
