US Lawmakers and Health Experts Concerned About Influencer-Backed Energy Drink

The Controversy

US lawmakers and health experts are scrutinizing the influencer-backed energy drink that has gained popularity among kids because it can contain dangerous levels of caffeine.

Senator’s Call for Investigation

On Sunday, New York Democratic Senator Charles Schumer called on the Food and Drug Administration to launch an investigation into Prime, a beverage brand founded by YouTube stars Logan Powell and KSI that has become something of a youth craze.

A Major Health Issue

“One of the symbols of a hot summer for kids is not a costume or a toy, but a drink,” Schumer said.

“But buyers and parents, beware because this is a major health issue for the children who flock to it,” he added.

The Rise of YouTube Prime

Backed by two well-known stars, YouTube Prime immediately created a buzz upon launch last year, causing long queues at grocery stores and school markets.

School Bans and Pediatricians’ Warnings

And the drink’s caffeine content has led some schools in the United Kingdom and Australia to ban it, as some pediatricians have warned of potential health effects for young children, such as heart problems, anxiety, and digestive issues.

Company’s Defense

In turn, company representatives defended the product, which was unequivocally classified as “not recommended for children under 18 years of age.”
