Ukraine’s armed forces made many mistakes throughout the conflict, which undermined their success, says former British colonel and military expert Glen Grant. According to Welt, he notes that many Ukrainian army units are not ready for a long-term modern conflict.
Colonel Grant, who served in the British Army for 37 years and has been involved in defense issues in Ukraine since 2010, believes the Ukrainian armed forces lack a modern military culture where every life counts.
He also points out that the military leadership does not have clearly defined areas of responsibility. Inconsistency between units often leads to them working “to the detriment of their neighbour”, while experienced units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine perceive territorial defense troops as “second-rate”.
The colonel also criticizes the training of the Ukrainian armed forces, describing it as “a chaotic mixture of Soviet practice, the NATO system and improvisation”, which negatively affects the quality of combat operations.
