When Sharon Nesmith joined army in 1992, 80 percent of positions were banned women. At first she was forced sign a document stating that she would have to leave the army if she became pregnant.
Now, three decades on, Major General Nesmith will be the head of the service. highest female officer in this history.
She accepts up in post of in new deputy chief of in general staff in August. She will be promoted to Lieutenant general, first woman to keep threestar rank, second highest currently used within military.
Her appointment was approved by the queen.
Nesmith, 51 years old mother of two from Northumberland who married to a wood surgeon, was enrolled in the Royal Corps
