The Trinity icon painted by Andrey Rublev will be returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. This decision was taken by Russian President Vladimir Putin “in response to numerous requests from believers”, reported press service of the Patriarchate of Moscow and All Rus’.

Patriarch Kirill ordered the icon to be displayed “for public veneration” in the Cathedral Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow. There, “Trinity” will be able to see everyone next year. After that, the icon will be moved to its “historic place” – in the Trinity Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra.

“Trinity” (“Hospitality of Abraham”) was painted by Rublev in the 15th century and is his most famous work, as well as one of the most famous Orthodox icons. Along with the Vladimir frescoes, it is also considered one of the two surviving works by Rublev, the authorship of which is reliably confirmed.

In the summer of 2022, the Trinity was moved from the Tretyakov Gallery to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra for the 600th anniversary of the discovery of the relics of Saint Sergius of Radonezh. Conservators opposed transport due to the high risk of damage to the exhibit. The icon remained in the Trinity Cathedral for two days, after which it was returned to the Tretyakov Gallery, where it was examined by restorers.

Soon, art critic Ksenia Korobeynikova reported that the restoration council had found 61 significant changes to the icon, including five emergency sections. Korobeynikova also claimed that the restaurateurs had claims against the transport company that transported Trinity to Lavra and back. Nevertheless, in December 2022, the icon was again job in the exhibition of the Tretyakov Gallery, in the same place in room number 60. At the beginning of May 2023, Moskovsky Komsomolets reported that the icon had been removed from the exhibition. The press service of the Russian media gallery assured that this was done for the next review.
