James Cameron Says He Could Feel The Loss in His Bones as the US Navy Finds Pieces of Titan

As the entire world speculated the condition of the crew aboard the Titan, James Cameron, who had completed 33 dives to the Titanic’s wreckage site while working on his 1997 movie. He said, “I felt in my bones what had happened. For the sub’s electronics to fail and its communication system to fail, and its tracking transponder to fail simultaneously – sub’s gone.”

At the time of the last communication with the submarine, it was at 3500 meters deep heading toward the bottom at 3800 meters.

James Cameron said, “Their comms were lost, and navigation was lost – and I said instantly, you can’t lose comms and navigation together without an extreme catastrophic event or high, highly energetic catastrophic event. And the first thing that popped to mind was an implosion.”

The director’s assumption was on point. A US Navy official told CBS on Thursday that they had detected “an acoustic anomaly consistent with an implosion” not too long after the loss of communication.

James Cameron said that the week “felt like a prolonged and nightmarish charade where people are running around talking about banging noises and talking about oxygen and all this other stuff“. He added, “I knew that sub was sitting exactly underneath its last known depth and position. That’s exactly where they found it.”

All five passengers aboard the 21 foot sub are deemed dead. They were British businessman Hamish Harding; Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his teenage son, Suleman; French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet; and Stockton Rush, CEO of OceanGate.

OceanGate Expeditions, the company that operated the submarine has extended their condolences to the lost souls and their families.

Evidence is surfacing that OceanGate had been warned about the dangers of their experimental operations. Cameron’s anecdote about this is apt. He says, “We now have another wreck that is based on unfortunately the same principles of not heeding warnings.”
