A COUPLE at the Lviv border says they have seen people fainting in a horrific human crush after being woken by an air raid siren.
Chris York was staying in a hotel in western Ukraine when he received frantic messages from his girlfriend, Yaryna. Fearing for their lives, the two decided to leave and headed to Lviv.

On the way to the border, York said all the roads were gridlocked and the two said goodbye to Yaryna’s parents and grabbed all they could carry in suitcases.
Yaryna’s parents were supposed to drive them to the border but since her father was of fighting age, her parents had to stay behind.
“Standing at the side of the road, we all said our farewells, not knowing when we’d see them again,” he said. Then, the two started to walk to the border.
The couple says they came across many heartbreaking scenes on the way to the border, including a woman with her toddler son asking for help as he was too tired to walk.
Along the way, fights also broke out. “One man pulled out a retractable baton and threatened a van driver who he claimed had cut him off in the line of cars,” said York.
