Empower the World with Data

The 4th United Nations World Data Forum is being held in Hangzhou, Southeast China, from 24 to 27 April. The main theme of this forum is Empowering the World with Data. More than 1,600 delegates from nearly 130 countries and regions are participating in it, and the number of online participants is more than 7,000. This year’s forum focuses on four big issues. First, create more quality and inclusive data by strengthening generation and collaboration. Second, develop the value of data to better serve decision making. Third, strengthen data ethics by increasing data credibility. Fourth, establish a good ecosystem of data by running new collaborations in line with new trends.

UN Data Forum focuses on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and provides an opportunity for exchange of data producers and users around the world. Earlier this forum was held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2017, Dubai in UAE in 2018 and Bern, Switzerland in 2021. This forum presented many constructive suggestions and achieved important achievements in the country’s data and statistics capacity building, modernization of statistical institutions and data ecosystem construction.

As one of the organizers and host, Zhang Yi, director general of the Chinese State Bureau of Statistics, told the media that the current forum has three clear features. First, to emphasize the value of data. Future development cannot be separated from statistics. In today’s world, every person is a producer of data and also a user and beneficiary. We have to seize the opportunity of the rapid development of the data era to achieve a common win-win. Second, to be oriented towards future development. Data is playing an extremely important role in global governance and economic recovery. We should enhance the coordination and exchange of various countries in areas such as data production and use, information technology including big data, and the joint development of official statistics, so as to make new contributions to common development and the establishment of a more fair and just global data governance system. Go Third, to show Chinese characteristics. In this forum, various parties will share China’s experiences in the production and use of data. The Chinese side will lecture on issues such as the digitization of government and the use of big data in enterprises. Khang Yi expressed confidence that the current platform will mobilize support from various parties for data development and find an effective new way to upgrade data quality.
