The Potential Impact of Trump Surrendering to Georgia Authorities During the GOP Primary Debate
Jason Osborne, an adviser for Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, recently discussed the possibility of the former president turning himself in to Georgia authorities just before or during the first GOP primary debate. According to Osborne, this move could have a significant impact and “suck all the oxygen out of the room.”
In an appearance on CNN, Osborne expressed his belief that there is a “30% chance” of Trump surrendering to authorities after being indicted in the state’s election interference case. He suggested that if Trump were to turn himself in during the debate, it would overshadow the event and dominate the news cycle.
Osborne further explained, “And then Fox is stuck having to air the debate, whereas you and other networks are able to say ‘Wait a minute, Donald Trump has actually just turned himself in.’ And then there’s Tucker Carlson waiting on the steps of the courthouse able to interview him right there.”
These comments come in the wake of reports that Trump has decided not to participate in the debate and instead opted for an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. The timing of the interview is still unclear, but it is expected to air around the same time as the debate.
Trump’s decision not to participate in the debate was primarily attributed to his refusal to sign the Republican National Committee’s pledge to support the party’s eventual nominee in 2024. In an interview with Newsmax, Trump stated that there were “three or four people” he would not support for president.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform to address the debate and highlight his “extraordinary” poll numbers. He questioned the need for participating in the debate, citing examples of other presidents, including Ronald Reagan, who did not partake in such events. Trump emphasized his record and proclaimed, “I’M YOUR MAN. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
