As soon as the name of a nurse is mentioned, a picture of a girl serving a patient in white or sky blue clothes emerges in front of the eyes. The girls who cooperate in medical work have made this work so great that people call them ‘sister’ with great respect and love. Along with her profession, she also manages this word of mouth relationship without any discrimination. That is why these nurses are considered to be the ‘backbone’ of the service in medicine, the entire health system and all the medical systems related to it.

Words fall short when it comes to their contribution as assistants in the field of health. May 12 is ‘International Nurses Day’ which is completely dedicated to their duties. The contribution of nurses has always been commendable. But, he faced the challenges that were thrown in front of him during the Corona pandemic. The sisters even put their lives at risk in fighting Covid-19. Many nurses lost their lives while serving others in Corona. Then not only India but the whole world heartily appreciated his work. The world is aware of the harsh reality that without nurses the health system is not only incomplete but also helpless and helpless. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also kept the theme of this year’s Nurses Day to honor nurses, which is dedicated to their courage.

Nursing is the biggest profession related to health care and their maintenance in hospitals. The whole structure of health rests on their shoulders. Sisters are given the responsibility of giving injections, applying ointment etc. Although there are male staff in the nursing sector, but they are much less than females. There are two basic reasons for this. First, the patients see Mamta’s compassion in the female nurse. Second, she does her duty responsibly. This is the reason why nurses are well trained so that they can help patients psychologically, socially and medically. One more thing, till date there has been no corruption or scam in the nursing field. While the stories of the performance of many doctors and hospitals keep coming every now and then.

Almost all hospitals are under the care of nurses. No matter how big the hospital may be, even if there is a renowned doctor, without nursing staff no one can treat the patients properly. The Kovid period was such a time, when anyone used to shy away from the infection of the deadly virus. In such a situation, the nurses were busy taking care of the patients. The pictures of those times pass through the eyes even today, so even just feeling them, the heart trembles. Seeing the contribution of the nursing sector, the United Nations and its partner health organizations have appealed to all countries to invest more and more in health workers. This joint advocacy is also beneficial in many ways. Because the human body is now becoming the home of diseases. New types of diseases and viruses have plagued us. That’s why the health system has to be fixed now.

If we look at the current state of this profession, it seems that we are very backward now. According to the United Nations health agency, there are 22 million nurses and 2 million medics worldwide, which is half of the total number of global health workers. Overall, the entire health system rests on them. Their number in India is around eight lakhs. Despite this, the need for nurses has started to be felt even more. If time goes on like this, the world will definitely need several crores of additional health workers, almost half of which will be nurses and medicines, to meet the requirement of universal health coverage. Talking about the history of the profession, nursing was founded about 200 years ago by ‘Sister Florence Nightingale’, in whose memory International Nurses Day is celebrated every May 12 as a tribute.

We cannot underestimate the contribution of nurses even by mistake. How much is his work to be praised and appreciated, is it less? That’s why today is the day to hail their courage and devotion to duty. In the year 2019, a high-level delegation of world leaders brainstormed together in the UN, in which maximum appointments of nurses, medicines and nurses would be given priority in primary health. It was also considered to provide insurance and necessary facilities for them. The work was progressing that the era of Kovid started. However, this plan is still in limbo. Hopefully it will be discussed sooner or later.
