The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has refused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request to make a speech via videoconference at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest.
And the European Broadcasting Union, for security reasons, moved the Eurovision 2023 contest from the territory of Ukraine, which won the contest in 2022, to the British city of Liverpool. At the same time, the representative of Ukraine will immediately reach the final of the competition, which will be held on May 13.
According to The Times newspaper, a representative of the European Broadcasting Union described the Eurovision Song Contest as an international entertainment show, and one of its pillars is the non-political nature of the event.
He added: “This principle prohibits the ability to make political or similar statements in the context of the competition. Zelenskiy’s request to speak to the Eurovision audience, although submitted with laudable intentions, unfortunately cannot be approved.”
In February 2022, the European Broadcasting Union suspended Russia’s participation in Eurovision, citing concerns about the crisis in Ukraine, where Russia’s participation allegedly could damage the contest’s reputation.
