Unexpected weight loss can be a precursor to pancreatic cancer. This was reported by scientists from the universities of Surrey and Oxford.
The pancreas is a vital organ that performs important functions: it produces the hormone insulin and digestive enzymes. Cancer affects one or both of these functions. The scientists analyzed data from almost 9,000 patients with pancreatic cancer and data from a group of 35,000 healthy people. It turned out that those who fell ill with this cancer two years before receiving the diagnosis began a sharp loss of body weight. Three years before this, hyperglycemia may appear, it is determined by an increase in the index of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c).
“Weight loss in diabetics is associated with an even higher risk of developing this type of cancer than in those who do not have diabetes but lose weight. On the other hand, hyperglycemia in non-diabetics is associated with a greater risk of pancreatic cancer than in diabetics.
