The United Nations Sugar Day celebrations were held on 18 April at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, the capital of France. The purpose of the event is to showcase the charm of the Chinese language and enhance the exchange and mutual learning between civilizations. Yang Chin, China’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, delivered a speech at the themed forum held that day, saying that the theme of this year’s UN Chinese Language Day is “Chinese Language: Promotion of Exchange and Mutual Learning among Civilizations”, which reflects the importance of language and culture. This is in line with UNESCO’s objective of protecting cultural diversity, promoting exchange and mutual learning among civilizations, and maintaining lasting peace in the world.
In a video speech, Chinese Vice Education Minister Chen Chye said that language is the carrier of human civilization. As one of the six official languages of the United Nations, Chinese is an important medium for China to participate in international cooperation. It plays an active role in promoting people-to-people exchanges, cultural integration, and people-to-people contacts between China and various countries. Tawfik Gelasi, Assistant Director-General for Communications at UNESCO, said that as one of the most widely spoken languages on earth, Chinese is not only a language, but also a unique way of thinking with openness, splendid culture and long history. It is also a means to expand the interpretation of history, and to trace the civilization of centuries. The Chinese Language Day event provides an opportunity for the dissemination of these mediums.
Nicolas Idie, Governor General of Chinese Studies in France, said that Chinese is an international language, and the French government attaches great importance to Chinese teaching. From 2022 to 2023, more than 40,000 middle school students in France will learn Chinese, currently 884 middle schools and 24 primary schools in France offer Chinese courses. The themed forum held that day was attended by delegations from various countries based at UNESCO, the UNESCO Secretariat, France and more than 200 people from high schools in Europe. Short video clips celebrating Chinese Language Day were played, as well as live performances such as calligraphy, tea demonstrations and Chinese song singing. Let us tell you that in the year 2010, the United Nations designated one of the traditional twenty-four solar periods in the Chinese calendar, the day of the rain, which is called Kuiwei in the Chinese language, as the UN Chinese Day. This year the day of Annavrishti is 20 April.
