The Russian government has approved the sale of the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga

In accordance with the decision of the Russian government, the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga will be sold to the holding company of the car dealership Avilon. The Vedomosti newspaper published this information, citing sources within the Cabinet of Ministers.

A representative for Avilon declined to comment on a possible deal with Volkswagen. The representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade also did not respond to questions from the newspaper. However, a source familiar with Chinese company Chery’s plans said Avilon is also negotiating a possible production partnership in Kaluga with the Chinese automaker.

In March 2022, the arbitration court of the Nizhny Novgorod region stopped Volkswagen’s assets in Russia following a GAZ lawsuit worth more than 15.5 billion rubles. Interim measures have been imposed to prevent Volkswagen from leaving the country until the situation is resolved. However, on April 3, 2023, the court partially granted the petition of Volkswagen Group Rus, reversing the arrest on real estate, production equipment and other movable property of the company.

The Kaluga plant produced such car models as Volkswagen Tiguan, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Rapid. Volkswagen suspended production at the plant in March 2022.
