Dozens of buildings demolished after powerful Tornado breaks through Wichita area

Three students were returning from a storm-chasing trip. in Kansas OHP spokeswoman Sarah Stewart confirmed to CNN.

Drake Brooks, 22, Nicholas Nair, 20, and Gavin Short, 19, died at the scene. in Kay County, Oklahoma, just south of on the Kansas border and about 70 miles from Wichita. area where powerful tornado leveled dozens of building.

Daniel Carter, University of Oklahoma student who was a friend with victims, told CNN that Brooks, Nair and Short were on application that showed them location. When Carter noticed they hadn’t moved from the same spot on highway for more how half hour on Friday night he said he hoped they stuck in traffic.

But Carter and his friends started calling every hospital within a 200-mile radius, he said. Rough six hours later they found out their friends are dead.

“We mourn,” Carter said. “All three of those guys were the light for world.”

AT tribute posted on Facebook, Carter described Short as “one of smartest and brightest people he had met. “He made I smile every time I see him,” Carter said.

Carter called Nair very popular. He told CNN a lot people called Nair “Mr. O.W.” because “wherever he went, he had to stop and talk to people he knew.”

And although Carter said he didn’t know Brooks, as well as others, they shared several conversations about weather and video games.

“These three young men are people i try to be like every single day,” wrote Carter. in his tribute.

representative for the university said the storm-chasing trip was not sponsored by the school.

“The university is empty to study of tragic departure of three students,” the university said in a statement. “Each of them was a valuable and beloved member of of our community. At this time we ask public respect privacy of their families.”

The accident is under investigation, according to OHP.
