What is Lean?

Lean is a recreational drug that was first made in Houston, Texas, and known as Texas Tea.

The concoction — which has also been dubbed “liquid heroin” — is made with cough syrup, loaded with codeine and antihistamine and mixed with fizzy drinks to enhance the flavour.

The cough syrup turns the liquid into a purple colour, which is where the name purple drank and purple tonic comes from.

It is also known as Sizzurp.

The drug is available almost everywhere across the US and a Sun investigation has revealed Brit dealers are illegally buying it on the dark web, to make their own purple drank.

What are the dangers of Lean?

The purple drink is a mixture of several different drugs.

Codeine, a main ingredient, produces feelings of euphoria.

But when consumed in large doses, the codeine can create dangerous side effects and opioid withdrawal symptoms.

The antihistamine acts as a sedative at high doses, especially when mixed with codeine.

Side-effects include:

  • Anxiety
  • Yawning
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Cramps
  • Diarrhoea

It can also induce a number of very dangerous effects including confusion, night terrors, wheezing, hallucinations and seizures.

Videos on TikTok that promote the use of Lean should be reported immediately.

TikTok’s community guidelines state: “We do not allow the depiction, promotion, or trade of drugs or other controlled substances.”

What rap songs are based on purple drank?

Lean dominated headlines in the latter part of 2018 following the death of US rapper Mac Miller.

Miller, 26, died of a suspected overdose on September 7.

While it is not known if purple drank was to blame, Miller admitted in a 2013 interview that he had been addicted to it.

Here’s some of the songs surrounding the drug:

  • Future – Codeine Crazy
  • A$AP Rocky – Purple Swag
  • Chief Keef – Go To Jail
  • Soulja Boy – Molly With That Lean
  • Big Moe – Purple Stuff (feat. D-Gotti)
