2nd Chance Movies: We need a vacation

By Kev Spirited

Spring has shown the chill the door, and the Easter holiday has come and gone, yet many of us are still hungover with the winter blues. We dream about getting away from it all. For many, the geopolitical climate and economic pressures have tapped our piggy banks and put vacations on hold for now.

No worries- here are a few films with the tropical paradise vibe that hopefully lift your spirits and make you smile.

2nd Chance Movies is a reoccurring column dedicated to suggesting films you may have missed or overlooked when they originally were released but deserve another consideration.

We all have our reasons why we choose to pass on movies when they first hit the theaters.

  • Perhaps the movie lacked effective promotion and never got on your radar.
  • Maybe you had the film on your list, but buzz initially appeared to fizzle and lacked popularity, so you scratched it off your list.
  • And then there is the rationale that generated the primary reason this writer created the concept of 2nd Chance Movies –You were not even born yet when the movie was released.

Dim the lights, plop down in that boldly striped beach chair and grab a Pina Colada but don’t skimp on the umbrella! Let’s jump right into our list of movies that you should add to your 2nd Chance Movies list.

# 1. Captain Ron

This 1992 film was directed by Thom Eberhardt and written by Thom Eberhardt/Jon Dwyer. Captain Ron starred two powerhouses, Martin Short and Kurt Russell. Martin Short plays a middle-aged father from Chicago and Mary Kay Place played his wife with two kids. He learns his recently deceased uncle left him a yacht once owned by actor Clark Gable so he takes his family to the island of st Pomme de Terre (st potato) and is hopeful it’s in decent shape to sail back to Miami with the intent to sell and use the proceeds to make their lives a little more comfortable. When they arrive on the island they see the boat is in less than good condition, to put it mildly so they hire a local captain Ron Rico(Kurt Rusell) to help them sail and repair it for the trip to Miami. In typical movie tradition calamity ensues, yet in the end they reunite as a family and have quite the adventures. Beautifully set in the Caribbean you can feel the warm water and sand between your toes and a smile on your face.

#2. Club Paradise

The recently passed Harold Ramis directs this 1986 movie written by Harry Shearer, Tom Leopold, and Chris Miller. The film starred beloved actor and comedian Robin Williams and legendary actor Peter Otoole.

The lead character, Jack Moniker(Williams) a Chicago firefighter injured on the job retires to the Caribbean island of Saint Nicolas. Character Anthony Croyden Hayes(Otoole) is appointed by the British crown as governor of st Nicolas. While retired Jack meets a nightclub owner played by reggae musician Jimmy Cliff and invests in his club however foreign investors want the club so they can build a huge resort. Jack and Jimmy set out to create their own less than a 2-star resort and hire a pilot to transport tourists. The cast of visitors is a who’s of SCTV alums like Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, and Mary Gross. This film is fun and a great way to relax imagining you are laying in a hammock drinking a rum and coke jamming to some reggae music, and fantasizing about revolutions -you will understand when you watch the movie.

#3. The Mighty Quinn

Finally, to round out our Caribbean vacation via film is 1989, Carl Schenkel directed, The Mighty Quinn. This stars Denzel Washinton and Robert Townsend.

Xavier Quinn(Washington) is a police chief on a small tropical island on the case of a high-profile millionaire found murdered. The main suspect turns out to be his best friend Maubee(Townsend). Xavier doesn’t believe it and clashes with local political and economic developers threatening his job, family, and reputation to find the truth no matter what. This is not a comedy but has humorous moments. The Caribbean scenery is breathtaking and the Bob Dylan song The Mighty Quinn in reggae style will surely be stuck in your head.
