Rs 2000 currency note: Is RBI going to issue new design Rs 2000 note? Is RBI preparing to issue new Rs 2000 notes of Mahatma Gandhi series?
We are not asking this, rather this question has been asked to the Central Government in the Parliament. When the government asked this question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chowdhary said that RBI has issued new Rs 2000 notes in 2016 itself.
Rajya Sabha MP Rajmani Patel had asked this question to the government, to which the Minister of State for Finance has given the answer in writing. He asked the government whether RBI is going to issue a new Rs 2000 denomination banknote along with the new series of Mahatma Gandhi notes and if so, on what date these notes are going to be issued?
Answering this question, the Minister of State for Finance said that in 2016 itself, the Reserve Bank of India has issued a new design note of Rs 2000 in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) series.
Rajmani Patel asked the government whether it has given mandatory instructions to banks not to re-circulate Rs 2000 notes and instead deposit these notes with the Reserve Bank of India. So the Minister of State for Finance flatly refused and said that no such instruction has been given.
In the same session of the Parliament, the government was asked whether RBI has banned giving 2000 rupee notes through bank ATMs, then the government strongly denied these things. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that no such order has been given to the banks. The Finance Minister said that according to the annual report of RBI, there has been no demand for supply of Rs 2000 notes since 2019-20.
